How to Mystic Tan Like a Pro

Ross: I went to the tanning place your wife suggested.
Chandler: Was that place the sun?

Remember when I said I was a master of Mystic Tan? Several of you wanted to know more, so here are a few tips for the palefaces.

1. Shower, shave and exfoliate.
2. Do not moisturize. (Use lotion only on extremely dry knees and elbows.)
3. Wear loose clothing.
4. Once inside the machine, stand with your arms out like the girl pictured below. Remember to separate your fingers though. (Think, jazz hands!)

5. Tilt your head back at a slight angle so you get an even tan on your face and neck.
6. When it's time to turn around, hold your arms out the same way as before, but keep your hands in front of your body this time. (This prevents a double spray on your hands.)
7. When you get out, immediately wipe off your hands and feet. Your hands and feet will still hold some color. Wiping them off will prevent them from being too dark.

8. Lightly dab the rest of your body with a towel. Dabbing, not wiping, will prevent streaks and an uneven tan.
9. You'll want to avoid sweating and showering for the next 6 to 8 hours. (Personally, I spray tan at night. I wait until the next morning to shower.)
10. After your first shower, you can moisturize like normal.

*For me, a Mystic Tan typically lasts 7 days.
**If I'm trying to get tan for a special event, I will spray a second time 72 hours later.
***Chlorine and salt water will cause the tan to fade faster.
****Mystic Tan isn't right for everyone, but you won't know until you try.
*****Getting a great Mystic Tan takes time. If you don't get it right the first time, try again.

I hope these tips help you achieve the perfect Mystic Tan. If you end up looking like Lindsay Lohan, it's because you can't follow instructions. Don't blame me.

I've always thought about diong the Mystic Tan. I have fears of looking like an oompa loompa. Not to mention, I've seen the epi of Friends a few too many times. My luck, I would end up being Ross. You would never let me live it down.

I was totally going to do this last year, and write a post about it. Must put on my To Do list.

I'd add:
USE THE LOTION! I know, I know.. The 'pro' does not. But I do! Pile it on when it comes to the nails & knuckles!
Also, Tan-N-Go's HYPER MOIST is your BFF! It's awesome, awesome!! AFTER you shower, BEFORE you Mystic.. moisturizer. I LOVE IT!!

Mystic can be such a lifesaver when in need of a good bronzing... although I was in a super rush the last time I went and my feet look like I kept my shoes on the whole time. F.

Excellent tips. I've never ever done spray tan. I should have tried it out when I was working for a salon years ago but it was so much easier to sit in a bed and fry like bacon.

I can't stop giggling about that Friends episode. :)

I can even hear Chandler's perfect delivery of that line.

Thanks for the tips - I haven't done it yet, but when I do I will be ready!

This is great! I'm going to have to print this out and take it with me next time I go. You are truly a master. :)

I've done Mystic Tan and I've stood naked (and humiliated) while someone spray tanned me with an air gun. If you can stand the humiliation those tans end up looking fabulous.

Thanks! I really want to try it but I'm afraid of being an oompa loompa.

Someone needs to share this with the Jersey Shore kids.

I wonder if the contestants on DWTS go through this kind of training...

What's lame is I don't even know where the nearest spray tan place is around here!!

I tried it once and I felt like a panting dog in there. And then I felt like half of it came off on my clothes & bra.

So I would like to add another part to the loose clothing section: a bra is probably not the best thing to wear out of there either....especially a white one.

Ok, Miss Pro. I have never done it and I want to. My husband would tease me forevah if I did though.

I've never done any sort of artificial tanning. I say it's because I live in California and don't need to, but the truth is it scares me.

Wow! This seems really hard!

Great advice, Mystic Master!!

That is one of the best episodes of "Friends" ever, absolutely brilliant....."I'm an EIGHT!!!"

For some reason, this post really makes me laugh. I've never gotten a spray tan before (I've used lotions and stuff on my own -- not as effective) and now I want to try it!

Did we both blog about tanning on the same day? LOL - great minds think alike! :o)

In my home country, the Philippines, people whiten their skin. If you're tanned, like I am, people would ridicule you and say you're ugly.

Let me just say that I'm so glad that I have a natural tan, and I don't have to go to great lengths to get one. :)

I did this for my high school reunion...I am pasty white...and it helped give me back my so cal glow!

OH my god, jazz hands!!!! You're so right!!! I like to refer to the mystic tan as the tanning car wash. It's so what reminds me of but it soooo works.

Happy SITS!

Stopping by from SITS. I love Mystic Tan! I'd do it every week if I could afford it.

i really needed this. I get airbrushed by hand twice a month bc I am afraid of a Ross incident. I remember when that episode first aired, and ever since than that is all I can think about! Thanks for the tips; I think I will give it a shot now.

My skin looks like a vampire. I don't tan, I burn... Never thought about Mystic Tan. Probably from my Mom's experience. She didn't do a Mystic Tan; she did one of those spray on tans on her legs. Only... she missed some spots and ended up looking like a zebra for a week!

I am as close to an albino as you can get. If I took the time to tan, it would only make me ivory colored, that's how white I am. If I tanned, people would still continue to ask me if I was feeling ill like they do now. It's the plight of those with Irish pigment.

I hate my ancestors.

And Hello? I just glanced over at your photos as I was reading and not to be all coveting your bloggy neighbor's husband, but daaaang lady! You've got a hot fireman for a husband? You won the lottery! You are one lucky girl.

I did Mystic Tan once in summer and had to run an errand to Home Depot on the way home and while in line I noticed I was sweating orange, never again, it wasn't for me.

I've never done the Mystic Tan thing, but your tips make it a little less scary. Thanks for sharing and congrats on your SITS day!

Stopping by from SITS, congrats on your day!! I tried the Mystic Tan the first time a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. Your tips are great though, I'll have to try them next time I go, thanks!!

Oooh, thanks for this! I have a wedding to go to in July and I'm so pale I make Edward Cullen look golden brown. :) I have always wanted to try Mystic Tan but my best friend came out looking speckled when she did it, so I was wary. Now I'll know what to do!

Hilarious. And thanks for the tips.

Hehe - Mississippilessly???

I've gotten one two or three times. I've had the dirty hands & feet but I only used lotion and didn't really wipe them off. I'll try that next time.

Other than that it looks great. Just a word to the wise - don't use the same foundation you normally do or you'll have a tan body and a pale face!
