Christina Aguilera's National Flub

Once the final numbers are in, this year's Super Bowl will be the most watched television program of all time. OF ALL TIME! I'll go ahead and assume you saw Christina Aguilera sing the national anthem before the big game. In case you’re one of the five people who hasn’t seen it, I’ve included the video for your viewing pleasure.

She flubbed the lyrics. Everyone noticed. I wasn’t going to bring it up, but feel I need to since everyone’s still talking about it. They talked about it on my favorite morning show. My father-in-law brought it up at the dinner table last night. I’ve also seen it in my Twitter stream a handful of times.

I get that "The Star-Spangled Banner" is our country’s most important song. I know that everyone learns the words early on in grade school. We all know it by heart. We can sing it in our sleep. We stand in reverence when it’s played. Men take off their hats. Many place their hand over their heart.

Christina messed up on the biggest stage in the world, and people are ripping her apart. Saying she’s disrespectful… an idiot… and that her career is over. Seriously, people?! Her career is over because she forgot the lyrics for a brief moment in front of millions and millions of people? Yes, she’s a professional, but she’s also a human being. Give the girl a break.

I don’t even particularly like her, but I have to stick up for her.
1. She can sing her face off. She sounds better than 75% of the people who are asked to sing the national anthem. Even if you don’t like her style of singing, you can’t deny that she has natural talent.
2. She honored the event and dressed in a black suit instead of her normal cleavage-baring attire.
3. It’s not like she was disrespectful or careless. She knows the words and simply messed up.
One of my favorite bloggers had this to say on Twitter, "I think Aguilera did it on purpose. The Grammy's are coming up and she's now guaranteed a bigger audience. Win-win." -- @HotComesToDie

Well, damn. I think she's got a point.

So, what do you think?

Seriously, not the end of the world! I'm not American and don't know all the words to this anthem, but it's notorious for being a challenging song to sing!!! HONESTLY I didn't even notice the screw up (because I don't know the words.) LOLZ

She should have worn a better fitting suit, and had her hair styled by a professional but all in all everyone needs to give her a break! I'm sure she was nervous...and she tried her best. (they should have given her a teleprompter too!)

I think she messed it up and she's stupid...but not cuz she messed up. She was on the biggest stage of the world...of course you might mess up. No big deal.

I kind of think maybe she did it on purpose too! Either way though people shouldn't be so hard on her!!

Didn't see it and I can't watch videos at work... but I personally don't care that much.

I'm sure she knows the words, she just got nervous or something (Superbowl, hello!). No biggie. Girl can SING.

Plus I heard she was spot-on during rehearsals.

Here's my beef: Why can't people just sing it normal, like it's supposed to be sung--and not try to make it their own and add extra notes where clearly extra notes don't belong. I think that if she would have sang it 'normal', she might not have messed it up. No need to make the Star Spangled Banner a 'performance'. Just sing it like it was written.

Being English I didn't know she'd flubbed...
I was busy admonishing my American frieds for not standing during our SB party...they all seemed more interested in the cheese dip!

I completely agree with you! I'm totally over the whole fiasco. People make mistakes. The end.

And yes, girlfriend can SING.

When she messes up, they go to a shot of the players and they look at each other and one says "she messed up". I think that's hilarious. I guess if anyone should know it, it's them since they hear it every week. And, I was seriously impressed that she looked classy and not like a tramp.

I just don't think anyone wants to choose to mess up on the Star Spangled Banner, especially when they want to be respected as a performer and singer. She messed up, just like almost everyone else who sings it. Oh, well!

I just think she blew it. She's been living under the microscope more than usual lately with her divorce and her movie, she is human and will make mistakes, I'm sure she was nervous even though she does perform for a living...BUT...it was the National Anthem and she is a professional. She should have nailed the lyrics like she did the vocals!

Career ruined? I don't think so

Publicity stunt? Who knows, maybe?

The only thing I know for sure is that it could have been worse, there could have been a "wardrobe malfunction" along with it!

You know what? I saw somewhere in passing that she messed up the anthem but I didn't see it or hear a whole lot until this.

I totally agree with you on this!

I definitely think calling it disrespectful is taking it a bit too far. Yeah, she should have known the words, but can we move on already? Why is this getting as much treatment as the nip slip (which actually was done on purpose)?

I don't think she did it on purpose and I know she knows the words...and yes she is talented but I do think that she messed up because she was trying to show off with her vocal range instead of just singing the song...that that is what annoys me.

We all make mistakes. I feel embarrassed for her. I DO feel bad that everyone is making such a big deal about it. She at least tried to cover it up that she messed up, right?

I'm almost certain that it won't ruin her career but her partyin' ways might. She isn't supposed to go through a mid-life crisis for several more years. I'm not sure what's going on!!

I knew right away that it sounded "off".

I just figured it was nerves or she was putting her own flavor on it.

I don't really love Christina but I don't hate her. I definitely think it was a case of the nerves. I've been up on stage to sing with a band before and flubbed words to songs I've sang a million times. I can't even function without a karaoke screen. Put me up in front of THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE LIVE AND ON TV... I'd probably mess up too.

My point is though they practice for this type of thing, or they should... if she can remember all the lyrics to DIRTY while grinding her crotch on a dancer, she can take the same time and effort to remember the National Anthem.

Case in point, Miss Glee Star did America the Beautiful right before her, flawlessly I might add, she's not a professional recording artist but an actress with pipes that did broadway... she rehearsed and knocked it out of the park as Christina's opening act.

Christina should have prepared better and if all else fails write those lyrics on your hand!

P.S. If you watched the Championship games, a player from the Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Team sang the anthem before the Bears vs. Packers game. Again FLAWLESS and amazing and not a single word flubbed. Christina is a professional and while it was a case of the nerves, she should have worked harder at this.

Everyone is human, but she should have been better prepared. Just saying ;)

Wow I just said a ton for someone that isn't too passionate about her... but I am passionate about our national anthem.

But at least she didn't lip sync it! :)

Honestly I've messed up in the same way she did sometimes

It definitely wasn't that bad, and she was far far better than Rosanne or a million others who have murdered the song. She can definitely sing and sing well, but I didn't care for her version, forgotten lyrics aside. I think your friend has a good point, her flub sparked a lot more talk than her performance would have if she hadn't forgotten a word. Hmmmm.

Even professionals suffer from nerves. Seriously, it was a terrible mistake and one I'm sure she would kill to have back, but do I think she did it on purpose? Hell no, no one wants that kind of blowback. No way.

I do feel for her. I remember my first "big" stage moment. I was a gymnast and really really good. My first competition, floor routine. I knew my routine inside and out. Upside down and backwards and forwards. When the music started my mind completely went blank and I froze. FROZE in front of several thousand people. I had been dancing and swimming and doing competitions for years and never flubbed or froze. But this was big time and it was different.

Poor girl.

What do I think? Well, I'm glad you asked.

I think that instead of focusing on her flubbing the lines to a song, we should talk about what's really wrong. Her dyed, fried, and laid to the side hair.

Seriously? Is that the best wig she could afford? She looked like a crackhead hooker with last years shade of red Revlon lipstick caked on her big ol' mug.

I also think that if it takes you 17 minutes to sing a 3 minute song, then you might want to take out the dramatic riffs. They're annoying anyway.

I think she did it on purpose too.
I also think she looked like a blonde version of Snooki.

I posted about this yesterday too.

I agree...she made a mistake and it happens. What annoys me is that she was so busy oversinging the song that she wasn't paying attention to the lyrics.

You don't put your own stamp on the National Anthem. You just don't.

She's got an amazing voice. She should try using it properly.

We all make mistakes. Hollywood and celebraties are so EDITED that it was actually REFRESHING see one of them make a HUMAN ERROR. I don't think she did it on purpose. I think just messed up and experienced life unedited.

I did not watch it (I didn't even watch the video you posted - but that's because my internet is slower than death). But i really don't care..and I don't know words to the national anthem either...true story.

Christina said...

I totally agree with you. I haven’t been a fan of hers lately and I didn’t really like the way she sang the song, but she isn’t a terrible person because she flubbed. People are so harsh.

One thing that no one else mentioned here- and why I think she purposely messed up- is that there was a HUGE (Vegas huge) bet that she would sing over 3 minutes. Had she sung it properly (like, singing all the lyrics), it would have been over 3. I think she made a killing by messing up. And got more people to pay attention to her (for her singing rather than her personal life).

Plus, that's one of the longest lines in the song- just sayin.

I think it's a mistake that could happen to anyone. But it probably wouldn't have happened if she hadn't been so focused on trying to hit every note on the scale on every other word.

Better late than never...

I feel bad for all the crap she got. I, for one, would never be able to remember anything under all that pressure!
