Best Songs of 2013

I'm linking up with Helene for the Best Songs of 2013. If there's one thing I love, it's music. So this was especially fun for me. My list does come with a bit of a disclaimer though. I don't necessarily like the people on this list. Let's take Kanye for example. I don't care for his attitude, but I think he's a great rapper. And Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry are both annoying twits. A song should make you feel something, and each one of these did. Or they just got stuck in my head and wouldn't go away...

Royals, Lorde

Roar, Katy Perry

Rap God, Eminem

Bad Things, Meiko

Get Lucky, Daft Punk

We Can't Stop, Miley Cyrus

Work Bitch, Britney Spears

Blurred Lines, Robin Thicke

Black Skinhead, Kanye West

Money Make Her Smile, Bruno Mars

Pusher Love Girl, Justin Timberlake

The One That Got Away, The Civil Wars

If there's one thing you take away from this, it's that you should go download Meiko's music.

She's the best.

Addendum -- I totally forgot Thrift Shop. Shame on me!

What were your favorite songs this year?

December 16, 2013

I love all the December stuffs.

I have been very inconsistent with blogging lately. It happens every year around this time. Right now, I'm only interested in ALL THE CHRISTMAS THINGS! I decorated my house and put up the tree as soon as December hit. I've been listening to nothing but Christmas carols at home and in the car. We took the kids to see Santa over a week ago. There's Christmas programs, parties and last minute shopping to be done. The next few weeks will be busy, but fun. I'll be here through Friday. After that, I'll be taking my annual blogging hiatus until after the new year.

Here are some of my current Christmas loves.

Listening to

Always watching

Why I'm so excited

Santa's bringing a Kindle Fire for Dain and an American Girl doll for Rory.

And Mom are Dad are getting them...

So, what are you excited about this holiday season?

Celebs in Christmas Sweaters

I love Christmas. I also love Christmas sweaters. Some are meant to be funny and over the top. Others are just meant to be cute and warm. Here are some celebrities sporting their favorite holiday gear.

Lauren Conrad + Rose McGowan

Jessica Simpson + Paris Hilton

John Mayer + Snoop Dogg

Matt Damon + Sting

Eric Stonestreet + Cee Lo Green

Kanye West, Ellie Goulding + David Beckham

I don't currently own a fun holiday top, but I will have this one in my possession very soon.

I mean, who doesn't love a good Home Alone reference?

Quick + Easy Personalized Holiday Cards from OpenMe

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Open Me, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #OpenMeHoliday

I'm very close to my mom's parents. They've always been around for every major event in my life. And now, they're around for my children. Until recently, I hadn't thought much about them not being here. Unfortunately, they've both had a rough year. My grandmother has had several strokes and can no longer be left alone. My grandfather had a blood clot travel to his lungs and spent a week in the hospital. Thankfully, they're both hanging in there.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, we took a lot of family pictures. And one of my grandparent's favorite things is getting new pictures of the kids. I used to stress about taking the perfect photo, finding the best card, buying stamps, addressing envelopes, and getting Christmas cards mailed in a timely manner. Not anymore!

OpenMe takes the stress out of sending cards. You can select and personalize the perfect card and have them send it for you at a very low price. Of, if you really enjoy sending the cards yourself, you can have them delivered to you with envelopes and stamps.

It usually takes me a while to decide on a card I love. I usually start with 8-10 and end up narrowing it down to 3-4 before making a final decision. I already know which one's my favorite. Which one of these do you love?

When my grandparents open this year's Christmas card, they will see this special photo inside. I knew it would be perfect the second I saw it. Not bad for a picture taken with an iPhone 5!

OpenMe not only has a great selection of cards, their site is also very easy to use. You choose the card you like, upload your photo and type in a personalized message. Voila! It's done.

Visit OpenMe to send out fun, personalized cards via email or snail mail.

Rest in peace, Paul Walker.

On Saturday night, I received a text message from a friend. TMZ is saying Paul Walker died! I just knew it was another celebrity death hoax. TMZ's initial headline read, Paul Walker Dead At 40 In Fiery Car Crash. Another website said it wasn't true. For the next hour, I hit refresh over and over again. The story was spreading, but I couldn't find definitive confirmation. I kept holding out hope it was all a bad joke. I eventually clicked over to Facebook and there it was. Paul's official Facebook page had been updated with the news of his death.

I don't claim to know Paul Walker. I'm just a fan. It all started back in 2001 with a little movie called The Fast and the Furious. For me, it was an instant hit. I had the soundtrack. I bought the DVD the day it came out. Even when Vin Diesel opted out of the second one, I still went to the theater on opening night to see it. The same goes for the third one. And the fourth one. And the fifth one. And the sixth one! I still can't believe the success of this franchise. The movies have made over a billion dollars worldwide. I'm obviously not the only one who loves a good car chase.

I have cried several times for this man I've never met. From what I've read about Paul over the years, he was a simple guy. Even though he was a huge star, he didn't surround himself with Hollywood-types. He surfed. He raised his daughter. He created his own charity and donated his time and money countless times. On the day of his death, his charity was raising money for the typhoon victims in the Philippines.

As for my favorite movie franchise, it's up in the air as to whether they'll finish the seventh film. Even if it's over, I'll always have my DVDs. I can look at Paul's baby blues and gorgeous smile any time I want. And, to me, he'll forever be Officer Brian O'Conner.

"I just don’t understand. My heart hurts. It's broken." -- Tyrese Gibson

"I will always love you, Brian, as the brother you were... on and off screen." -- Vin Diesel

"He was motivated by work that allowed him to take care of his family, number one, and that also allowed him the power and the leverage to help people in need and in crisis." -- Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

"He lived with integrity, humanity and humility and seemed most happy when talking about his daughter, Meadow. I don't know anyone who lived each moment more fully and loved life more than Paul, making his loss all the more heartbreaking." -- Jordana Brewster

"He always stayed out of the Hollywood limelight. He lived in Santa Barbara and was devoted to his family. One thing that people don’t know is how dedicated he was to helping others. He went down to Haiti right after the earthquake and was raising money for people in the Philippines on Saturday. He was just a a great human being. Everyone fell in love with him the minute they met him." -- Frank Marshall

"He believed in God and Heaven. And more than anything, he believed in people. He really believed people were inherently good." -- Jesse Brisendine

You can donate directly to Paul's charity here. Fast and Furious 6 goes on sale next Tuesday, December 10. A portion of all DVD sales will go directly to his charity as well.

How I Eat on Thanksgiving

I'll eat turkey, but I prefer ham.

I don't eat dressing, cranberry sauce or green bean casserole.

I love deviled eggs. I love pickles. However, I do not like pickles in my deviled eggs.

Basically, my Thanksgiving plate has ham, rolls, deviled eggs sans pickles, and mashed potatoes on it.

Yes, that's right. I eat like a small child.

And I don't care what you think.

In the end, it's not what's on my plate that matters as long as I'm with family.

From mine to yours, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Now, can we get on to Christmas already!

2013 American Music Awards Fashion

The American Music Awards were this past weekend. I've missed it two years in a row now. Thankfully, there's recaps and videos online almost instantly. So, let's take a look at what some of our favorite or not so favorite artists wore this year.

I love this color on Ga. Very Rapunzel-ish, no?

She's really pretty, and this isn't so bad.

I feel like the dress is too simple, and the necklace is too big.

She looks pretty, but WTF is she wearing?!

I don't see anything new here.

It looks like her dress got caught in a wood chipper.

She's a gorgeous girl with gorgeous curves, but she's doing it wrong.

The dress isn't special, but I'm digging the cotton candy hair.

If only the keyhole cutout were a little bit smaller... It's just too much.

Three Words: Garbage Bag Chic

I think I'd like this more if it didn't have giant flowers on it.

Love her hair. Love the colors. Almost love the dress.
Why the weird cutout-slit-thingie?

Love the color. Love the shimmer. Love the heels.
I don't love the chest triangle or the hair.

It could be worse.

This look isn't half bad, but will she ever get the memo about wearing too much makeup?

Mr. Timberlake was there too.

The 75th Hunger Games

Tonight, my girls and I will be attending the premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Yes, that's right. We'll be in line with all the crazies. Who am I kidding? We are the crazies. This year, there isn't a midnight showing. We'll actually be seeing the movie at 8:00. Weird! I'm a little disappointed because I enjoy the late show. Regardless of the time, I am so excited to see the movie with my friends. I loved the books and thought the first movie was great. I can't wait to see how this one turns out.

And during today's commute, I'll be listening to the accompanying soundtrack. I downloaded it last night, and I'm already in love with Lorde's cover of Everybody Wants To Rule The World.

When are you seeing Catching Fire?

RIP Blockbuster

Before Netflix.. Before Hulu.. Before Amazon.. Before Redbox.. There was Blockbuster. Blockbuster rented out its final movie on Saturday, November 9 in Hawaii. I'll admit this news made me a little sad. Being a kid in the late 80s and early 90s, I have a lot of fond memories of the video store with the blue and yellow logo.

No one ever ran into Blockbuster, grabbed a movie and left. Going to pick out your movie(s) was an event. You were there for well over an hour, went down every aisle and looked at every new release at least twice. You always talked your parents into buying a few snacks. And, more often than not, you were in your pajamas.

I remember renting instructional cheerleading videos with fellow teammate Stacey. We went back to her house and mimicked the moves in her living room. I remember my first boyfriend Randall driving me to Blockbuster. We would walk around forever just to end up renting something we'd never watch. We were too busy making out. One time, he actually picked out The Adventures of Milo and Otis. To this day, I snort any time I think about this. Nine times out of ten, my mom picked a Julia Roberts movie. Seriously, how many times can one woman see Sleeping with the Enemy?

Fun Blockbuster Facts:

1985 - first store opened
1987 - won court case against Nintendo which paved the way for video game rentals
1990s - purchased by Viacom for $8.4 billion & expanded to the UK
2000 - turned down an offer to buy a one-year-old company called Netflix for $50 million
2005 - introduced online DVD subscriptions
2010 - filed for bankruptcy
2011 - acquired by Dish
2013 - closing all remaining US stores
Blockbuster's Final In Store Rental - 2013 comedy This Is the End

Now, if I want to watch a movie at home, it's quick and painless.

I ask you. What's the fun in that?
