A Bad Haircut Story

Rory is four and has had a head full of thick hair since birth. In recent weeks, she'd been begging me to cut it all off. She wanted to cut it to her chin. I said no. She wanted to cut it to her shoulders. I said no. If there's one thing I've learned from parenting, it's the art of compromise. As you can see in the first picture, her hair had gotten pretty long. I told her we'd cut three inches off and showed her how long her hair would be. This seemed to appease her.

The next part of our story takes us to Sweet & Sassy. If you're not familiar with Sweet & Sassy, it's a trendy hair salon and spa for little girls. Everything's pink, purple and green and covered in sparkles. I took Rory once when she was three, so of course she's been begging to go back. Our first experience was great. I thought this time would be no different. I told the girl to cut three inches off. I told her I didn't want any layers. I assumed she was competent enough to understand. {mistake #1) When Rory got up, everything looked fine. I saw her hair from the front and the back. I did not thoroughly inspect it though. {mistake #2} Her hair did have a ton of glitter spray in it. This could be why her hair appeared to look fine at a quick glance.

Once we were home, Rory started posing in my full length mirror. A few minutes later, she ended up beside my bed while I was watching tv. I glanced over then quickly had to look again. I was all... BACK THAT TRAIN UP! What I thought was a decent haircut turned out to be a horrible hack job. Will you get a look at this mess? I could have done a better job with children's scissors. At first I was pissed, but then I just started to laugh. What else could I do? It wasn't so bad it couldn't easily be fixed. And, I should have known better.

I immediately texted the picture to my stylist. I apologized for not coming to see her in the first place. I then asked her if she could pretty please squeeze us in and fix it. Three days later, she fixed Rory's hair and didn't charge me a dime. I still paid her even though she didn't want my money. If Rory ever sets foot in Sweet & Sassy again, it'll be for them to paint her nails. They will not be coming near her with scissors.

I'm terrified to take Boomer in for a much needed trim....I have enough trouble with MY hair. Definitely no sweet and sassy in our future!

I made the mistake of taking the boys to Super Cuts once for a hair cut. How hard is to cut give a traditional little boy cut?
Everything was going great with Nathan until I walked away to check on Drew. Apparently, he told the stylist he doesn't like bangs and to just cut them off. AND SHE DID. This woman listened to a 6 year old. The worst part? It wasn't even straight. We invested in a lot of hair gel while we waited for it grow out.

I'm glad your daughter's stylist at least fixed the cut - I can't how terrible that initial cut was though, holy cow!

my mo took me to a BARBER SHOP once. it was awful, and i was traumatized for life.

almost as bad as the time the lady cutting my hair cried THE ENTIRE TIME. i had a lot of trauma in my childhood.

How silly of you to assume a stylist in a professional salon would be competent!

Yep, Bri goes to my stylist too... But she's been growing hers looong. She's only been getting trims.

Her hair was so super long! I can't believe that chick thought she had done a good job. Ick! Glad it all worked out! And she is such a pro in front of that camera!

That was so nice of your stylist to not charge you to fix another stylists horrible job. Looks like in the end Rory got her wish, almost shoulder length hair. Do you think she told that Sassy stylist to do a hack job for that reason ;)

That's pretty ridiculous. I could have done a better job! I've taken Nolan to a kid salon twice. The first time was awful and I had to fix it. I decided to give her a second try (he was screaming the first time, so maybe it wasn't entirely her fault). Nope, same bad job. I've been cutting his hair since, which I know doesn't look great, but the only other kid place costs $28 a haircut. For a boy. I can't do it when he needs a cut once a month. I love that your stylist fixed it without taking a ton off. Good job! She looks so cute!
