The Talk of Tinseltown
Conscious Uncoupling

Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald have split after two years of marriage. The Twilight star and American Idol musician wed in October 2011 after seven months of dating. Despite the split, they will continue to work on their debut album which is set for release later this year.

Chelsea Handler is set to end her late-night talk show Chelsea Lately after eight seasons. Handler plans to leave E! when her contract expires later this year. She's exploring several opportunities including her own radio show or possibly another late-night gig with a different network. I enjoyed her show early on, but eventually stopped watching because it grew repetitious. I'm definitely interested in seeing what she does next. I think she's hilarious and love all of her books.

There's good news for Harry Potter fans. J.K. Rowling is not only writing the screenplay for a film adaptation of her wizarding textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but it's being worked into a trilogy. Rowling has agreed to write all three films, which will be set seven decades before the start of Harry Potter's story. Even without knowing anything about the films, I know I'll see them.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and Chris Martin, 37, are ending their 10-year marriage. Paltrow announced the split on her GOOP website under the heading Conscious Uncoupling. What exactly is a conscious uncoupling? According to Dr. Habib Sadeghi and his wife, Dr. Sherry Sami:

"By choosing to handle your uncoupling in a conscious way, regardless of what's happening with your spouse, you'll see that although it looks like everything is coming apart; it's actually all coming back together."

Blah blah blah. Who cares!

William and Kate, the cutest royals ever, released this informal family photo recently taken at Kensington Palace. Baby George, now 8-months-old, is looking at Lupo, their Cocker Spaniel. Oh my gosh, how adorable is this picture? Love them!

7 Important Life Lessons from Frozen

I picked up a copy of Disney's Frozen at Target last week. The kids and I watched it for the first time on Saturday. I now understand why everyone's so Frozen obsessed. It's possible that I loved the movie more than Dain and Rory did. And guess who can't stop singing about snowmen and letting go? This girl! The powerful people at Disney have outdone themselves once again. Aside from the humor, bright colors and catchy songs, Frozen is full of positive messages. Here are 7 important life lessons we can all learn from Frozen.

1. The truest form of love is loving yourself.
Learning to love yourself is what fills you with love. If you can see the good from within, someone else is certain to see it too.

2. You'll never know your true potential if you constantly live in fear.
Sometimes, taking a leap of faith is necessary in order to get what you want, even if it means failing a few times. You'll never know what you can do if you don't try.

3. Learn to live and let go.
Everyone's going to experience moments of anger, jealousy and sadness. Instead of holding the negativity in, learn to let it go.

4. Family and friends are everything.
Lean on loved ones when times are tough instead of pushing them away. Romantic relationships may come and go, but your family and friends are forever.

5. You don't need a man to be queen.
This one's pretty simple. A woman doesn't need a man to achieve success. She can do it all on her own.

6. Losing control can mean hurting others.
Keep your emotions in check. Things you say and do can affect those around you.

7. A pretty dress and a great song can make any day better.

Memphis BBQ
5 Places To Try

There are two things Memphis, Tennessee is famous for, Elvis Presley and barbecue. After seeing this post from Stephanie at Not Entirely Perfect, I knew I had to stray from the norm and talk about food for a minute. Specifically, I want to talk about mouth-watering bar-b-q. Or is it BBQ? However you choose to spell it, it's good. And if you think the barbecue in your town is great, you are wrong.

If you ask a Memphian to name their favorite place for BBQ, you'll get a long list of answers. There's yummy BBQ all across this great city. I don't know that I've ever had bad BBQ per se, just some I like more than others. Here are my top 5 picks for BBQ in Memphis:

1. TOPS Bar-B-Q - There's a TOPS down the street from my grandparents' house. I can remember going there all the time as a kid with my grandfather. One thing I've always loved about TOPS is their amazing customer service. Their staff is always so friendly. And, even though this post is supposed to be about BBQ, I won't lie. Their burgers are my favorite. But trust me when I say the BBQ is great too. They've been in business for over 60 years and have 15 locations throughout Memphis and the surrounding areas. So, if you visit, it won't be hard to find a TOPS nearby.

2. The Germantown Commissary - The Germantown Commissary was a small country store for over 90 years until it was turned into a BBQ joint back in 1981. Their slow-cooked BBQ and ribs are so good. Everything they serve, even all the fixins', is made by hand. Aside from the delicious food, what I love most is the restaurant's laid back atmosphere. Fun Fact: Playboy named The Germantown Commissary as one of its 10 top U.S. barbecue restaurants.

3. One & Only BBQ - I had One & Only BBQ for the first time last year when my office ordered it for lunch. Their pork is cooked daily in cast iron smokers. The meat is so tender and delicious. I especially love their BBQ sauces. They offer both mild and spicy sauce, each homemade. They have two locations which are open 7 days a week from 10 to 10.

4. Gridley's Bar-B-Q - Gridley's has been around since I was a kid. Unfortunately, there's only one location left. Even though the restaurant is located within a strip mall, it has a spacious dining room filled with local memorabilia. The menu offers a wide variety of barbecue, but I would highly recommend the ribs. They are some of the best I've ever eaten. So good you'll slap yo mama!

5. Charles Vergo's Rendezvous - Located in a downtown alley basement, the world famous Rendezvous is the most talked about BBQ joint in town. Hell, it's probably the most talked about BBQ joint in the world. Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Bill Cosby, *NSYNC, The Rolling Stones, and past Presidents have all eaten at the Rendezvous. The restaurant has catered for President Clinton and Justin Timberlake and even been featured in several John Grisham novels. Although most famous for its ribs, the menu is as varied and interesting as the staff. Rendezvous employees tend to stick around, most of them for decades.

So, tell me, who's hungry?

It's finally Friday. This weekend's plans include a movie or two, some outdoor sports fun and March Madness in my pajamas. Go Wildcats!

Jailhouse Rock, Elvis Presley

The Stroke, Billy Squier

Drop It Like It's Hot, Snoop Dogg

I'll Be There For You, Bon Jovi

To Be With You, Mr. Big

The Joker, Steve Miller Band

More Than Words, Extreme

Just A Friend, Biz Markie

Baby Got Back, Sir Mix-A-Lot

Cry Me a River, Justin Timberlake

My Heart Will Go On, Celine Dion

Ignition (Remix), R. Kelly

What are some songs you never get tired of hearing?

Spring 2014 Wishlist

Today is the first day of spring! For a lot of us, this will soon mean warmer temps and less layers. Even though the weather isn't fully cooperating in Memphis, I've already started to daydream about bare legs and sandals. This winter was a tough one, so I'm definitely looking forward to all things spring. Here are just a few things I'm loving this season.

What kind of blogger are you?

Bloggers are often being labeled. There's mommy bloggers, cooking bloggers, fashion bloggers, lifestyle bloggers, and entertainment bloggers... just to name a few. Some blogs have a niche while others don't. Some of us have been blogging for years, and some of us are brand new. Regardless, we are all in it for the same thing. Or are we? In my research, I have found there to be 12 kinds of bloggers.

1. The too cool for school blogger
When you get seventy-three comments on a post and don't respond to one... This is you, asshole.

2. The LOOK AT ME blogger
Look what I bought! Look what I made! Do you like my new outfit? Here's twelve pictures of me wearing it!

3. The wears fancy clothes for pictures, but jumps right back into sweats blogger
That's right, honey. We're onto you. No one gets that dolled up for a quick trip to Target with the kids. And no one wears a tutu to their 9-to-5 office job. Even Carrie Bradshaw is giving you the side eye. For once, I'd like to see a style post with a t-shirt, yoga pants and a dirty ponytail.

4. The mean girl blogger
We all know this girl. She gripes. She complains. She points fingers. She tries to make herself look good by tearing others down. We only read your blog to feel better about ourselves.

5. The dirty hippie blogger
I'm looking at you mom who has eaten her own placenta.

6. The stay-at-home mom who wants you to think she has it all together when she really cries into her wine every night blogger
The average mom who stays home all day with a toddler doesn't have an immaculate kitchen and spotless floors. The average mom doesn't host playdates in her pearls. It's ok to tell us you locked yourself in the bathroom after your 2-year-old peed on the couch for the third time in two days. Motherhood is messy, so show us your mess from time to time.

7. The I don't care if you like me or not because I'm blogging for me blogger
You don't feel the need to change who you are to fit in with the cool kids. You don't buy bubble necklaces and put your hair in a top knot because it's what all the other bloggers are doing. You aren't obsessed with numbers and stats. You're just going to keep doing what you're doing even if no one's reading because you're having fun.

8. The I will work for comments blogger
Instead of standing on a street corner begging for food, you comment on ALL THE BLOGS with a direct link back to your site. We see you there, but we're going to sidestep right past you.

9. The I whore myself out for free shit blogger
We don't know who you are as a person because you're too busy promoting someone else's product. What we do know is that dollas make you holla.

10. The I don't know really know what I'm doing, but I'm going to keep doing it anyway blogger
If you still have a scrapbook blog layout, you're doing it wrong. If you still don't know how to format pictures in your blog post, you're doing it wrong. If you're a no-reply comment blogger, you're doing it wrong. This isn't to say that a new blogger should know everything. That's just ludicrous. But you watch and learn. If you've been blogging for years and still don't know what's up, you're DOING IT WRONG!

11. The tries too hard to be popular blogger
If your blog button is on every single blog I visit, you're trying too hard. If you're in five giveaways a week, you're trying too hard. If you promote the same blog post on Twitter ten times a day, you're trying too hard.

12. The I hardly ever blog, but refuse to shut this bitch down blogger
If you only blog three times a year, maybe blogging just isn't for you.

So.. Tell me..

What kind of blogger are you?

The Genius of True Detective

You know how hard it is to get into a mediocre book after you've finished a great one? I often feel the same way about television shows. After binge watching Breaking Bad, I had been desperate to find a new show on its level. I started deleting one show after another from my DVR because they couldn't hold my interest.

This all changed when I started my love affair with True Detective. I can't remember when or how I first discovered the show. I just knew I'd be watching after hearing the words Harrelson, McConaughey and HBO. The first 8-episode season premiered in January to rave reviews, and I was instantly hooked.

From HBO's website:

To say the show is dark and creepy would be an understatement. As fellow blog friend Kelly put it, True Detective is like The Silence of the Lambs and Seven get married, then Seven realizes it has married into The Texas Chainsaw Massacre family. Aside from the show's darkness, it's brilliantly written and directed. And can you go wrong with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey? No. No, you can't.

Woody is great, but Matthew is better. McConaughey's portrayal of Rust Cohle is the best of his career, even better than his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club. Rust is gritty, raw and deeply troubled. Yet through his pain and anguish, you're able to see his brilliant mind and sense of humor. And, like every single one of his onscreen personas, there's a little bit of McConaughey himself in the character. His honest performances are why I love him so much.

True Detective is one crazy twist and turn after another. Every week, I had a new theory. And every week, Woody and Matthew had me on the edge of my seat. I was so anxious and nervous the night of the finale that I actually wanted to throw up. That's good tv, y'all.

Currently, there's no final word on a second season. What we do know is that Harrelson and McConaughey won't be back. The show will reportedly refocus on two new detectives. Even though I'll miss Rust and Marty, I know that creator Nic Pizzolatto has great things in store for us. The latest buzz is that they're trying to get Brad Pitt.

Oh, my True Detective lovin' heart is all a flutter!

The Talk of Tinseltown
Sad Kitty Emoji is Mad

The 18th season of Dancing with the Stars premieres tonight. Some of this year's celebrity dancers include Candace Cameron Bure, Danica McKellar, NeNe Leakes, Billy Dee Williams, and Olympic gold medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White. Other than catching a few minutes here and there in passing, I have never watched this show. Even though I won't be watching, I will be rooting for D.J. Tanner. Duh.

Actor Chris Pine pled guilty to a DUI charge in New Zealand today. The actor was ordered to pay a fine and will have his license revoked for six months. Pine is currently in New Zealand filming the 2015 movie Z for Zachariah. Pine, who is said to be extremely remorseful, signed autographs for fans on his way out of court. Once again, let this be a lesson to us all. Don't drink and drive. Boom!

Designer and former model L'Wren Scott was found dead inside her Manhattan apartment today. Initial reports say Scott took her own life. The longtime girlfriend of rocker Mick Jagger was 49.

I, for one, am sick of Miley just being Miley. The pop star made another bold move this weekend. She got a tattoo of the sad kitty emoji on the inside of her lip. But why? No, really, why?!

Jamie Lynn Spears, Brit's younger sister, got married over the weekend in New Orleans. She wed longtime boyfriend James Watson. Jamie Lynn's daughter and Britney's boys were the flower girl and ring bearers. Spears, 22, and Watson, 31, were engaged last March.

The cast of Pretty Little Liars attended the 2014 PaleyFest in Hollywood over the weekend to talk all things PLL and dish about the season 4 finale airing tomorrow night. They also talked about the upcoming season which will focus on Ali's homecoming. Ugh, not more Ali!

Five On Friday
Chevron + Pink

For the first time in two weeks, I didn't have a blog post scheduled in advance.

So, today, you get this!

1. I'm wearing my favorite outfit today. Don't tell my boss, but I have a job interview during lunch. I think chevron and pink are a winning combo. Don't you?

2. Believe you can, and you're halfway there. I am trying to live by this mantra every day.

3. Spring has sprung which means we're back on the soccer and baseball fields several times a week. There go my Saturday mornings in bed with coffee.

4. I recently read Chelsea Handler's new book, Uganda Be Kidding Me. If you like her sense of humor, you're sure to like this book. It's hilarious and crass like the others. I highlighted this quote from the book because it's so true. If there's one thing I can't tolerate, it's a know-it-all.

5. If you haven't seen this video, please watch it. It's one of the cutest things I've seen in a while. We actually quote it now at our house.

Enjoy your weekend!

I love a good thriller.

I watch and enjoy movies from every genre except for horror. If there's blood, gore, torture, and a creepy psycho killer, you can almost always count me out. I just don't do scary unless it's a Wes Craven Scream film.

What I do love is a good suspenseful thriller! Even though a thriller can have some of the scary elements from above, they're more about the story than over-the-top blood and guts. Listed below are some of my favorite thrillers. Each of these movies either made me jump out of my seat, had me reeling when the true killer's identity was revealed or just had me intrigued and entertained from beginning to end.

Is there something missing from my list?

What thrillers do you love?

Easy DIY Teacher Gift
Colored Pencil Vase

I originally saw the idea for this DIY teacher gift on Pinterest. Since it passed the looks so easy Misty could do it test, I decided to give it a try. Way back in October, Dain's teacher had a birthday. Instead of donating to the class gift, I made my own.

I chose colored pencils, a Halloween-inspired ribbon and fake flowers in fall colors. The teacher doesn't have to clean anything, and she can easily swap the ribbon and flowers out as the seasons change. Easy for her, easy for me. Everybody wins!

a vase or jar
a box of pencils
hot glue gun + glue sticks

How To:
Lay out the pencils you want to use. Put a dab of hot glue on the bottom and top of your vase. Press the first pencil into place. Continue until the vase is covered. Tie your ribbon around the pencils, both as decoration and to hold the pencils in place while the glue dries. You can also put a ring of glue around the inside of the rim for an additional hold.

It really is that easy. This teacher gift is perfect for the first day of school, teacher appreciation, birthdays, and holidays. If you decide to make one of your own, I'd love to see.

The Talk of Tinseltown
$hailene, $elena + Ke$ha

Christian Bale and his wife Sibi are expecting their second child together. The couple, who has been married for fourteen years, already have an 8-year-old daughter. I'm only a little jealous. Because, if I'm being honest, Batman is my favorite.

Singer Ke$ha has decided to drop the dollar sign from her name. She's just plain ol' Kesha now, which is her real first name. This comes after spending two months in a rehabilitation center for an eating disorder. I'm glad Kesha with an 's' is feeling better. I quite like her.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber just can't quit each other. The two pop stars were together again this weekend in Texas. They were spotted sharing breakfast and making out during a game of laser tag. Come on, kids. Get a room!

Shailene Woodley recently revealed in an interview that she doesn't own a cell phone. She decided to ditch it due to the lack of camaraderie and community these days. She said she actually has to communicate with people now. "The more you get away from all the technological buzz, the more freedom you have." Girlfriend has a point, but I don't think I'll be ditching my phone anytime soon.

HBO Go, the cable provider's streaming service, crashed during the finale of True Detective last night. Fans were having a meltdown on Twitter. I can't say I blame them. True Detective is true genius, y'all. Last night's episode had me on the edge of my seat more than all of the Dexter episodes combined. I was so nervous at one point, I actually wanted to throw up. If you're not watching this show, you should be.

A post dedicated entirely to True Detective is coming soon.

Less than a year after her split from George Clooney, Stacy Keibler has gotten married. She wed tech entrepreneur Jared Pobre in Mexico over the weekend. The two had been friends for five years, but didn't start dating until this past fall. Many congrats to the lovebirds.
